Lap it up, Chch

The Pixies loved our country so much that they’ve announced they’re coming back real soon.

To Christchurch, that is. They wanted to see more of New Zealand, so figured they’d play the South. And play what? Well, not a set focused on Doolittle (great as it was to see performed in its entirety), but one dedicated to more even coverage of their albums.

Wellington is pretty nice too, guys. Stop on by.

What do we love?

Flicks.co.nz has released the results of its Great NZ Film Poll, and the top 100 films of all time is a pretty typical list – global but with a couple of choice Kiwi classics.

Though I have to say, I do rather like reading consumer polls, as there tends to be a greater variety of films on offer than with more ‘critical’ polls. Sort of an equilibrium, where all genres and creative aims get a show-in – Die Hard was never a great film, but boy is it a great film to watch. Its place in cultural history deserves recognition.

Then again, consumer polls are popularist by nature, and many lesser-known gems get completely passed over. Which is where critics polls can come in handy.

Then again, neither sort of poll will speak wholly to you as an individual, so it might be nice to create your own poll for yourself to discover what you like, too. I use the word ‘discover’ deliberately – you might be surprised when you stop and think honestly about it.

I am delighted, if more than a little surprised, to see on the Flicks top 100 the awesomeness that is Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

As for the worst 50 films NZers voted for… also largely typical. Although there are a few films in there that I’m sure wouldn’t, on a global level, be voted anywhere near the bottom.

These sorts of polls – that is relating to cultural material – do afterall reflect something of our own national biases and tastes.

Marvelous!

21 03 2009

I took my busted zipper trousers to the clothing doctor today. I pick them up in a week. I have till then to find a nice way to break the news that they’ve been replaced…

You see, I also stumbled into Marvel Menswear, though only half expecting to maybe think about possibly buying something (like some brown trousers).

This, of course, was a dangerous mindset to be in.

So, yes, I got new trousers.

And the quality of their cut and fabric transfers directly to the amazing way they feel. They were expensive, being a designer, New Zealand made brand, which seems counter to my cheapness – but it’s not really. Because these babies will last and last and won’t ever stop feeling terrific to wear.

Quality is worth paying for.

Especially since their excellent cut also means they’re flattering. This is important as I had to buy them a size up from what I’d have bought before…

*sigh*

Luckily, I’m still a small shirt size, so I also purchased a nice, simple short-sleeve on sale. It looks like this, only beige:

Actually, while the shirt I got is beige, the colour in this picture almost exactly matches that of my trousers.

I also almost bought a brown belt, but I realised in time that this would only lead to a criminal act in being paired with my black shoes.

Now, back to the less marvelous world of study…
